Siddharth Roy Kapur who also plays the lead character, abandons his earlier camera work and focuses on directing as well. The film is set in the backdrop of Mumbai, the Hindi film industry, and the film deals with a story of two friends, Nandita(Sonam Kapoor) and Radhika (Shraddha Kapoor). They decide to leave their college studies to become dancers. They join a dance troupe led by Pritam (Naseeruddin Shah), who teaches them the fundamentals of dance. Nandita falls in love with Abhimanyu(Govind Namdev) a gangster who in turn, falls in love with Nandita. Nandita rejects Abhimanyu, stating that he is a gangster. At the same time, Nandita is in love with Abhimanyu and is afraid of losing him. The film has a score by Vishal–Shekhar, lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, and cinematography by Rajeev Roshan.
The film has a non-linear narrative. The song sequence "Chal Rahen" which is set in New York City, begins with a pan-tilt camera. It then cuts to a slow-motion version, which pans out to Nandita dancing at a fast pace. The camera then cuts to a slow-motion close-up shot of Nandita. This pan-tilt camera sequence is used for the entire song "Chal Rahen". Nandita then meets Abhimanyu at a festival and they start dancing together. They begin to develop feelings for each other, and eventually they fall in love. Abhimanyu meets with an accident, which leaves him in a coma. Nandita is distraught, and stops dancing. Nandita then starts attending to Abhimanyu's family. When Abhimanyu begins to respond to Nandita, she tells him that she loves him but cannot leave her father's house. Abhimanyu visits Nandita's house, and they have sex. Abhimanyu dies soon after. Nandita then continues to dance. The scene cuts to Pritam dancing. Pritam talks to Nandita about her inability to dance, and Nandita begins to take dance lessons from him.
